Family Center

For more than 25 years, Hillsides Family Center has been providing mental health services for children and families in Los Angeles County, including San Gabriel Valley and Pasadena. Having been a pioneer in the field, Hillsides was one of the first agencies in Southern California to offer "in-home" counseling services to families at risk, who are unable to access services in our clinic. The mental health needs of families we serve have changed over the past years, and the array of services we offer has been designed to accommodate these needs.

The bilingual, multidisciplinary staff provides mental health services to clients who are Medical eligible or for children with a history of abuse or at risk. To end the cycle of domestic violence in our communities, Hillsides Family Center services include:

  • Intake and assessment
  • Individual treatment
  • Infant Mental Health
  • Group treatment
  • Case management
  • Psychological testing
  • Psychiatric evaluation
  • Medication management
  • Family therapy
  • Family Support
  • Family Preservation
  • Resource and referrals

In addition to the services above, Hillsides Family Center sites provide the following programs:

School-Based Services
Hillsides School-based Mental Health Services provide comprehensive mental health services to children in a setting where many of these needs are first detected. School sites are located in Pasadena and Los Angeles Unified School Districts. Hillsides also offers crisis counseling for students that experience extreme trauma in their homes, their community, or their school. Students that receive services have the potential to be more successful in school, in social settings, and in family settings.

Therapeutic Behavior Services
Therapeutic Behavior Services (TBS) offer intensive one-on-one services to children whose needs go beyond a weekly therapy session. A trained therapeutic behavior specialist works with a child in school, in the community, and in the home, devising an attainable behavioral goal, and then meeting with the child to assist him or her in developing the skills to reach that goal. Staff also provides training and support to caregivers and assists them in developing a plan to work with the child to attain behavioral goals. TBS is an intensive service used with other treatment modalities including individual therapy, group therapy, and medication support.

Intern Training Program
Since 1986, the Intern Training Program has trained over 200 interns from a variety of disciplines, which include MFT and MSW interns, doctoral students, and postdoctoral candidates. We provide a broad base of clinical experience and training during a year commitment. Students receive an intensive two-week orientation followed by an assignment to the Family Center, committing to a 16 or 20 hour per week program. Services provided by the students include intake and assessment, group, individual and family therapy, case management, psychodiagnostic testing, and client advocacy.

Community Based Clinics

Baldwin Park Counseling Services
Baldwin Park Counseling Services staff at the Baldwin Park Teen Center work with a majority of Latino children and their families, who consist of 78 percent in the community. Children and youth under 18 comprise 38 percent of residents in that city. Hillsides is the only counseling program housed in the teen center. The following areas are typical issues addressed in treatment: depression, oppositional defiance, anxiety, communication problems, sexual abuse, and familial issues.

Hillsides Community Center
Hillsides Community Center (HCC), located in Echo Park, emphasizes youth leadership development through community services, activism, education on social/environmental issues, and overall increased participation to enhance the Echo Park community. In addition to the Youth Leadership Council, HCC also provides advocacy and community enrichment programs such as free computer classes.
