Youth Moving On provides former foster youth affordable quality housing and numerous support services to help them transition successfully to adulthood. Over 20,000 foster care and probation youth transition out of care each year burdened with the extraordinary feat of finding affordable housing and meaningful employment to survive. Many emancipated foster youth don't have the skills to live on their own and face homelessness and other obstacles. Others are able to preserve their dignity with a job and an apartment, but they struggle to live above the poverty line, unable to secure a living wage.
Hillsides created YMO with support from the Everychild Foundation in Los Angeles after staff noticed that many of our former foster care youth needed more help and time after emancipating at age 18 to prepare for the challenges of adulthood. A few organizations were providing transitional housing to emancipated foster youth, but there weren't enough beds for Hillsides youth and many others like them in Los Angeles and Pasadena. Hillsides' innovative transitional living and permanent housing programs give young adults the job training, financial know-how, and the counseling they need to find fulfilling careers and become responsible, self-sufficient adults. Specific support YMO offers includes:
- Healthy connections with supportive adults
- Workforce development to eliminate barriers to meaningful employment
- Weekly life skills classes that encourage community and critical thinking, teach coping skills and problem solving, and promote healthy lifestyles and civic engagement
- Therapeutic and individualized rehab services
- Career and Education counseling plus scholarships
- Money Management training
- Linkage to ancillary resources and service providers in Los Angeles
